A priority on the Vicsport and State Government agenda is to grow, nurture and develop female administrators working in the sports industry.
This morning, we did exactly that at the LEAD Masterclass. For those of you who may not have heard of the “LEAD” program before, let us give you an insight as to why this program is vital for women looking to excel in their careers (and personal lives too).
The LEAD Masterclass is a standalone event open to all female administrators working in the sports industry. In short, the acronym spelt out in full – “Lead, Engage, Achieve, Develop” is an opportunity for women to come together and enhance their leadership skills and support their professional development.
Facilitated by Alison Crab and Lyndall Russel, the two-hour event covered the topic of mentoring vs coaching, and how women can utilise both skills at their respective workplaces.
Alison and Lyndall speaking openly about the impact of mentoring and coaching
Broken down simply, coaching is a technique of questioning that explores where an individual is currently at in their lives, where they want to be and the choices they must make to reach their goal.
Mentoring has similar characteristics to coaching, although mentoring is usually about a particular task, job or process. Fundamentally, the mentor is the teacher and the coach is the guide.
Alison and Lydall discussed the power of being inquisitive and refining the art of questioning when coaching and motoring;
“Elevate your questions, be specific in what you’re asking and improve the quality of your questions”.
Lyndall referenced the need to always look to the future and not be concerned about the past when speaking openly with a coach;
“Coaching is about moving people forward. People keep getting stuck where they are”.
The Western Bulldogs Grand Final win in the AFLW demonstrated how mentoring and coaching can achieve great results
The power of listening was on also the agenda this morning, Lyndall again making it quite clear why it is important to invest time in being a good listener when engaging a coach;
“Listen in order to understand, not to reply”.
Details for the next LEAD Masterclass will take place in June, keep an eye on the Victorian Sport Calendar for more information.
