About Us

In simple words - Vicsport's aim is to get as many people in Victoria engaging in sport and physical activity as possible. We are the peak body for sport and active recreation in the state and work closely with the Victorian Government to promote the many benefits sport has to offer.

For over 30 years Vicsport has provided advice, assistance and support to its members and the broader sports community. Through our extensive network, Vicsport’s constituency includes 16,000 clubs and associations and over 3.9 million participants including paid staff and volunteers who make a significant contribution to the social, physical, mental and economic wellbeing of the Victorian community. The following Strategic Overview was developed by Vicsport Board and staff from the Strategic Plan:

Welcome to Vicsport's Strategic Plan for 2017-2020. This plan is the next iteration to the 2014-2016 Strategic Plan which revitalised Vicsport, enabling it to redefine its purposes, services and membership. Vicsport’s four strategic priorities are:

1. Participation

  • Increasing opportunities for physical activity, participation and membership for all Victorians.
  • Promoting innovative, flexible program design and delivery.

2. Industry

  • Industry prosperity and workforce development (paid & volunteer).
  • Supporting the workforce to deliver sport & adapt to new delivery models.
  • Building member capacity.
  • Improving governance and commercial capability.Member capacity and networking (governance, participation, membership and commercial models).

3. Safe, Fair & Inclusive

  • Promoting safe, fair and inclusive sporting environments at all levels.

4. Advocacy

  • Demonstrating and advocating the health, cultural, social, economic and mental wellbeing benefits of sport to the whole-of-government and relevant agencies.

Vicsport has also identified two industry issues that are cross-cutting and relevant across each priority area:

  • Safe, inclusive and fair sport
  • Monitoring, evaluating and demonstrating impact

Vicsport impacts on these priority areas by "building the capacity and capability of members and stakeholders to encourage and enable greater participation." The outcomes of Vicsport working towards through this work are:

Through Vicsport's leadership, advocacy and networking there is: 1. Raised awareness of industry priority issues and strategies to respond.
2. Raised awareness across non-sport sector stakeholders of the benefits of sport participation.

2. Whole of Government investment and focus on industry priority issues.
3. Commitment from non-sport sector stakeholders to support sport participation initiatives.
Organisations supported through Vicsport projects have: 3. Improved knowledge and understanding of local club, activity providers and facility capability.
4. Committed to action to address industry priority issues.
5. Improved capacity to address industry priority issues.
4. Increased income from commercial and pay-as-you-play revenue.
5. Improved governance, workforce development systems, participation and commercial models.
6. Provided more opportunities for social, recreational and pay-as-you-play participation
Vicsport Professional Network members and Professional Development Program participants have 6. Improved governance leadership and management skills.
7. Improved knowledge and understanding of how to improve professional practice.

Vicsport achieves these outcomes by delivering work at the Industry, Organisation and Individual level as follows:

Through though leadership, advocacy and networking Vicsport will:

  1. Raise awareness of members and stakeholders on industry issues including; participation of women and girls, ethics and integrity, inclusion, children’s safety, facility planning (inc. utilisation & acquisition) and other important issues as they arise.
  2. Collaborate and partner with members, Sport & Recreation Victoria, VicHealth and the broad sports industry to develop strategies to respond to and progress priority issues.
  3. Raise awareness across Government, members and stakeholders of the health, cultural, social, economic and mental wellbeing benefits of sport.
Deliverables (what will be done)

  • Collaborating, building partnerships and working with members and industry stakeholders.
  • Advocating and campaigning on important policy issues.
  • Undertaking industry benchmarking and evaluation.
  • Recognising and rewarding excellence via the Victorian Sport Awards.
Organisations supported through Vicsport Projects will have:

  1. Improved professional practice in governance, workforce development systems and commercial business models.
  2. An improved understanding of industry priority issues.
  3. Examples of, and greater capacity to deliver, actions, activities and programs addressing industry priority issues.
  4. More opportunities to increase physical activity, participation and membership of sports organisations.
Deliverables (what will be done)

  • Providing a high quality advice, advocacy and support service to members.
  • Conducting events and enabling industry networks.
  • Partnering with businesses that provide quality services relevant to members (preferred suppliers).
  • Creating and sharing information on industry events, research & trends.
  • Building the capacity of members and industry stakeholders in: Good Governance, participation, commercialisation and workforce development.
Vicsport Professionals Network members and program particpants will have:

  1. Improved knowledge and professional practice in governance, leadership and management.
  2. Increased opportunities to undertake senior management and governance.
Deliverables (what will be done)

  • Growing the Vicsport Professionals Network.
  • Providing high quality professional development and networking opportunities for industry professionals, board members, key volunteers and students of sport management.
