Earlier this month, Softball Victoria launched a new competition that will see four teams compete in six matches, followed by a final series. The competition will bring together elite players within the softball community, with each team lead by one ambassador.
Vicsport intern James Godden, sat down with Nick Frayne, Softball Victoria, CEO and discussed the details of the competition and the significance and future impact from its creation.

Nick Frayne: “The reason behind this competition came from a lack of competitions/events involving females at the elite level. Not only this, there is also a general lack of attention around softball in Victoria due to the large gap between local club level and the interstate and national teams and competitions. None of these events are broadcasted and only sometimes streamed online. It was a belief that the community had a thirst for a new competition.”
Approach:
According to Nick, the competition’s creation began by establishing a need for something new. Once the need had been established, it was about finding venues, recruiting elite players and coaches to ensure the competition is of a certain standard.
The next step involved the promotion of the competition. This was achieved through securing someone to create the branding for the event whilst writing promotional articles on the Softball Victoria website and social media channels.
Outcomes:
The outcome of the competition is to create an opportunity for softball fans to watch a high standard of play. The significance of viewers and audience members will create a greater need for players looking to join the sport. The competition will also increase sporting icons and heroes, giving junior players role models to look up to. With hopes of a successful first year, expectations of a greater talent pool will provide a solid platform for growth of the sport statewide.
