Sport Jam Discovery: A conversation between you and us

A conversation between you (the reader) and us (Vicsport).

You (thinking): What will I have for dinner…

Us: Pasta?! And while it's cooking, we'd like to invite you to Sport Jam Discovery – an innovation professional development opportunity for sport and recreation people!

The what?

The Sport Jam Discovery. It is a newly evolved version of the successful Forward Thinking Series and Sport Jam workshops run by Vicsport – in partnership with VicHealth – since 2014. The program empowers you to use human-centred design to increase participation in sport and active recreation.

Sounds interesting, so what’s new about it?

We’ve partnered with human-centred design experts Rowboat who have worked on sport projects with the International Cricket Council, Cricket Australia and Tennis Australia. Where the past Sport Jam events ran straight for two days, the Sport Jam Discovery will include two workshops separated by a two week gap so that you can practice human-centred design in the real world.

By signing up you’ll get:

  • two engaging, practical, full day workshops
  • a take-home workbook full of practical tips, tools and frameworks
  • lots of real world opportunities to practice human-centred design skills
  • plenty of mentoring from innovation experts
  • extensive networking opportunities.

Taking place over two weeks, we’ll start with an educational workshop on March 18. Following that, you’ll have time to practice new skills with real people. We’ll reconvene on April 1 to brainstorm innovative solutions to common challenges.

What do you mean by ‘solutions to common challenges’?

We all want to increase participation in sport and active recreation, yet despite the wide range of successful initiatives out there, 7 out of 10 Victorians are not active enough based on weekly cardiovascular activity.[1]

There are close to 16,000 sport clubs in Victoria, and while activities like yoga and fitness classes are on the rise, Vicsport believes sporting clubs and facilities can play a greater role in getting our community more active. Therefore, we have set a high-level theme for the program:

How might local sport clubs and facilities become hubs of social sport and active recreation… so that we increase participation by less active people?

Within this theme, you’ll tackle issues like equity, inclusion, sustainability and more, by using human-centred design as a tool to discover great new insights and generate new ideas.

I’m convinced! How can I get involved?

Head to the event registration page via the link below. Participation in the full program costs $25 for Vicsport members and $65 for non-members. We will send participants more information as the first event day nears. You can also opt to be a ‘team captain’ – more information is available on the sign up page.

Enjoy your pasta tonight! We can’t promise pasta at the Sport Jam Discovery, but we will be providing healthy, tasty food for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.
