Getting the best out of your board members

On Wednesday 2 May 2018, Vicsport in partnership with the State Government of Victoria held an event Strengthening Successful Boards at the Metropole Hotel in Fitzroy, Melbourne.

The purpose of the event was to give the audience an opportunity gain a further understanding of how to enhance board performance and culture.

The writing is on the wall. Board members brainstorming ways to enhance board performance

Strengthening Successful Boards followed Vicsport's previous event in February Building Effective Boards which focused on electing, inducting and appointing new board members.

Bridie O’Donnell, Head, Office for Women in Sport and Recreation opened the session and highlighted the importance of giving new board members an opportunity to be vocal and discuss their objectives:

“We invite people to be on our boards, let them speak. They need to be heard. Let’s embrace people who’ve chosen to be on boards at sport clubs”.

Bridie further commented on the need for creating positive change;

“It is important to reach a critical mass of diversity on boards to empower and enable minority voices to speak”.

The workshop was hands on prompting the audience to drum up new ways they can make slight changes to their boards to benefit their sporting organisation. Post-it notes, butcher paper, pens, textas… it was all systems go!

Long and short-term strategies were discussed on how to improve board culture. Conversations evolved from discussing methods on how to assess board performance, to putting systems in place to support making changes to the board.

Strategy. Do you have a strategy in place to build you board with the right members?

Vicsport has a suite of online resources for organisations to gain a further understanding on what they need to do to meet the incoming quotas. Resources can be found here.
